A wind turbine is a rotating machine which converts the kinetic energy in wind into mechanical energy. If the mechanical energy is used directly by machinery, such as a pump or grinding stones, the machine is usually called a windmill. If the mechanical energy is then converted to electricity, the machine is called a wind generator, wind turbine, wind power unit (WPU), wind energy converter (WEC), or aerogenerator.

Wind turbines basically come in two categories, Horizontal (HAWT) and Vertical (VAWT).

Horizontal Wind Turbines include 12th century type windmills, 19th century type windmill, and modern wind turbines. Modern wind turbines are the typical large, three-bladed turbines you see in areas with open prairies, that have blades which rotate on a horizontal axis like a propeller.

Vertical Wind Turbines are typically used when taller structures are prohibited. VAWTs rotate on a vertical axis and sometimes have curved blades or vertical panels that somewhat resemble sails. Vertical Axis Turbines are not as efficient as HAWTs, but produce lower noise and are more easily acquired and installed by the general population, with the exception of very small wind turbines with direct drive generators.
